Powder Room Ideas

Usually the smallest room in your house, the powder room is mostly ignored. However, it can prove to be the most interesting room to renovate. A powder room consists of a sink and a toilet, and is called a guest bathroom or “half-bath”. In the early nineteenth century, people didn’t like guests to enter their private space to use a bathroom. So, they found it convenient to have a small bathroom somewhere in the outer parts of the house, which the guests could use to freshen up and groom themselves. This small bathroom, meant for non-overnight guests, eventually came to be known as the powder room. Having a well-designed powder room will make your guests appreciate your fine taste and creativity. You can incorporate a few of these creative decorating ideas, to give a fresh feel to your guest bathroom.

Powder Room Decoration Ideas

Walls
This is the most important aspect of any room. Bold and vibrant colors brighten up your room and add an element of surprise. For example, warm colors such as red, orange and yellow, make you feel energetic, while cool colors such as green, blue and lilac have a soothing effect on you. If you want a vintage look, you can paint the walls in neutral colors like white, ivory or beige. Go for cool, light colors if you have a small space and wish to make it appear larger.

Floor
Select a tile color that complements the color on the walls. For example, if your powder room has blue walls, you could opt for orange tiles. Similarly, you could also have lilac tiles with white walls. There are many options in flooring ideas for bathrooms and half-baths. The basic idea is to use colors that go well together. You could also select tiles of different sizes and materials.

Sink
Since your powder room is smaller than your main bathroom, it is wise to choose a sink that is small, yet adds to the wow factor. Small vessel sinks are the latest trend. You can choose one in stone, porcelain, glass or metal. It is a small sink placed atop the counter-top, like a vessel. It adds a touch of sophistication to the room. You may even opt for wall-mount sinks.

Faucet
The faucet is elementary, as it defines the style of the powder room. Faucets come in different designs and varieties. There are faucets with two knobs, levers, handles, etc. Make sure your faucet fits into the sink you buy. A faucet can even add a touch of sparkle to your powder room.

Toilet
Nowadays, toilets in unique designs are up for grabs. So, indulge your creativity and select one that blends with the theme of your powder room. Choose a toilet with a wall-mount flush tank. You can also look for one with a water-efficiency feature built in, which helps conserve water.

Base Cabinet
A base cabinet is where you store the basic necessities like room spray, an extra roll of toilet paper, a bottle of hand-wash, etc. The top surface of the vanity or base cabinet, is the counter-top. A wooden base cabinet, with a vessel sink placed on the counter-top, is one of the latest trends. You can also opt for a base cabinet that looks like an ordinary cabinet.

Mirror
The mirror would serve as the highlight of your powder room. Since you want a well-designed guest bathroom, a plain, boring mirror simply won’t do. Mirrors have the potential to create the illusion of a bigger room. So, choose a mirror that goes well with the theme and adds a dramatic effect. But, make sure that it easily fits into the space allotted to it.

Lights
Today, the ways to experiment with lights, are endless. It all depends on which particular space in your powder room you want to highlight. For example, if you want to highlight the beautiful glass sink that you have, you can place soft lights underneath the sink, to add a surreal glow. Similarly, you can be innovative with the mirror lights. Instead of the common sconces, you can opt for lights that hang from the ceiling, for a striking effect. A light attachment that forms beautiful patterns on the walls, is also a great idea for vintage themes.

Accessories
Once you are done with the basic components of your powder room design, you can add some accessories. These serve as the icing on the cake. Shower Room Design Ideas

Shower Room Design Ideas

The world of bathroom decorating has undergone a sea change over the years. While earlier people were satisfied with simple and practical designs for shower rooms, today they have realized that the visual appeal of a shower room is as important as its usefulness. Luxury and splendor can be incorporated even into a bathroom, and that’s what we’ll tell you how to do, in this Buzzle article. We have some ideas on how to design a glorious bathroom that will become the envy of everyone visiting it.

Contemporary
If a contemporary look is what you want for your bathroom, then the key is to use hushed tones in the design and the décor of the shower room. A simplistic design will work best for the contemporary, no fuss appeal. Have a shower enclosure with a glass door in the corner that faces the door. Get a clear glass door for the shower room, with a curtain hanging from the inside. The bathtub and the sink can face the shower enclosure vertically. Wood and light colored stone (cream, brown or beige) are the safest and most versatile materials you can use for shower room décor. Make sure that the sink (opposite the tub) is huge and the counter of the sink runs across the length of the tub. For effect, have a flower vase on the huge counter at all times. The flowers can be white, and also include a leaf or two for a little contrast. As far as storage is concerned, enclosed and beneath the sink is the best option. It won’t take away anything from the overall ambiance and will be convenient as well.

Monochrome
For someone who likes to play it safe and have a shower room that does not scream out loud, a monochrome is the way to go. Choose one color and design a clean and compact shower room using it. For instance, white is a very popular choice for monochromatic bathrooms. You can have a pristine tub in one corner, his and hers sinks across the tub, and a shower enclosure with translucent shower curtains in another corner, all in white. If you’re thinking of picking another color, then go for light shades like gray, very light green, beige, cream, and so on. For this design idea, enclosed cabinets above the respective sinks will work well. Or you can have them made and placed in a separate section of the room altogether.

Victorian
A Victorian theme for a bathroom is one of the best ideas, because of its detailed beauty. For a gorgeous Victorian bathroom décor, you’ll definitely need a claw foot tub. Place it on the longer side of the bathroom. Across the tub, you can have a glass enclosure with a walk in shower, or simply a portion sectioned off with a curtain. A huge ornately carved mirror will be the highlight of the shower room. It can be right above a large sink and have an ornate dark wood stool right next to it. Dark wood cabinets for storage can be placed below the sink or in a separate area.

Ultra Modern
Here’s an idea for those who want the room to scream style and panache! A huge bathroom with a sunken bathtub, placed vertically in the center of the bathroom is what you need. Have a huge mirror that runs from the ceiling to the floor placed right at the head of the bathtub. This mirror can be flanked by some fancy yellow lights, about halfway up the wall. Storage can be on any side of the tub. It will have to be a concealed cabinet, so that the visual appeal of the bathroom is not dulled. On the side that does not have the cabinet, you can place a tall flower vase in a bright color, that runs vertically halfway across the wall.

Minimalist
The basic point of having a minimalist design for a shower room is to maximize the space that you have, and use it as economically as possible. It is a very modern and practical approach to the designing and can turn out to be a masterpiece when done properly. For a minimalist design, a monochromatic color scheme works best. You need to have minimum accessories and shelves enclosed within walls to ensure that there is enough space within the bathroom. A simple design idea for it would be a tub and a sink (both in the same color), no separate shower enclosure, a cabinet that slides open into the wall for storage, and a simple rug outside the tub. Nothing gets exposed, everything stays concealed.

When you design a bathroom, you must keep not only yourself in mind, but also probable visitors. Sure you’re the one who should be the most comfortable using it, but make sure that the aesthetic value of the bathroom remains intact at all times. Regular cleaning and maintenance is the only way to do it. So design a beautiful bathroom and take good care of it!

How to Install Laminate Flooring in a Bathroom

How to Install Laminate Flooring in a Bathroom

Laminates are not a popular choice for bathroom flooring, as most people believe that high level of water exposure may buckle its planks. However, there are waterproof laminates available in home improvement stores which can be installed in bathrooms. There are a number of advantages associated with this type of flooring. It is made of an environment friendly material which is highly durable, and its cleaning and maintenance is not a big hassle at all.

As you know, waterproof laminates are to be selected for bathrooms. Take measurements of the bathroom and calculate the exact quantity of laminates needed. You also have to buy rubber underlay pads, nails, hammer, crow bar, power saw, rubber mallet, utility knife, etc. When you have procured all these necessary items, follow the installation instructions elaborated in the following Buzzle passages.

The Installation Process

Step #1: The first step is preparation of the work area. The best part of this flooring is that it can be laid on any type of surface, provided that the floor condition is good and is properly leveled. Remove the baseboards from walls, clean the floor, and check for any defects. If any damage is detected, it should be repaired before laying the floor. While working in bathroom, you have to disconnect the water supply, remove the toilet, and cover up the drains.

Step #2: Prior to installation, you must go for a dry run. Here, you will place the laminate board on the floor to get an idea how to cover up the floor. This is done because there are bathroom fixtures where you cannot fit in a whole plank. For them to fit in such areas, you need to cut the planks using a power saw.

Step #3: Place a moisture barrier sheet on the bathroom floor. Secure it along the edges so that it does not get displaced. Now, lay the rubber underlay pads over the plastic sheet. Generally, manufacturers provide instructions about installation of underlay pads and you have to follow the same. You have to cut holes on this pad when you are laying it around toilet flange and other such areas of the bathroom.

Step #4: Start installing laminate flooring in bathroom from any one corner. Place the first board one-fourth inch away from the bathroom wall. This is an expansion gap which has to be maintained along all the edges of the flooring. In order to keep the gaps uniform, you can use tile spacers. Lay the next board in such a way that the top edges of both the boards touch each other. Then take a rubber mallet and tap it gently so that the two planks get interlocked. Use the same technique to lay the remaining boards. You have to install the specially cut planks of laminate flooring around the toilet flange and other such areas in the same way, but in a very carefully. When you reach the opposite end of the wall, lay the last board with great care. A crowbar will be helpful in setting in the last plank on the bathroom floor.

Step #5: Apply a layer of silicone sealant on the border lines of two adjacent laminate boards. This is done to ensure that water does not seep below the laminate through these edges. You should also seal up the areas where bathroom fixtures are located. Finally, fix up the baseboards on the walls, so that the expansion gaps of the newly installed laminate floor gets covered up.

Laminate flooring adds so much beauty and warmth to a bathroom which tiles or any other material cannot give. Moreover, the cost is not very high. Therefore, you can improve the décor without spending a huge sum of money.
