How to Fix a Hole in the Wall

How to Fix a Hole in the Wall

Holes are easily formed on your wall due to various reasons, like, removing the nails used for fixtures, regular wiring, plumbing, etc. If you find that the walls in your house have been damaged due to any of the aforementioned reasons, then simply follow the step-by-step instructions given below.

Materials Required

Putty knife or chisel
Broad knife
Patching plaster
Latex bonding agent
White-pigmented shellac
Nails
Dusting brush
Paint
Sanding paper
Sponge

Procedure

Step 1
Clean out the loose material around the hole using a chisel and then dust off this area with a dusting brush.

Step 2
Next, take the latex bonding agent and dampen the edges of the hole. Read the manufacturer’s instructions before mixing and applying it.

Step 3
Now you’ll need the patching plaster. Read the manufacturer’s instructions and prepare the mix accordingly. Using a broad knife you have to apply the plaster to fill up the hole. A single layer is usually enough for small holes.

Step 4
In case of deep holes, you would need an extra layer. In this case, after applying the first layer in the hole, press it inside and let it set for about 30 minutes.

Step 5
After 30 minutes, take a nail and score the surface. This will help fix the next layer properly. Now let the first layer dry for about a day.

Step 6
Now it’s time to apply the second layer of patching plaster. This layer will fill up the hole and will make the wall surface even. Wait for 2-3 hours after application.

Step 7
The primary procedure is over, it’s time to give the finishing touches. Using the patching plaster in a creamy consistency by adding water, apply a smooth coat over the hole. Clean the surrounding area and wait for next 30 minutes.

Step 8
Dampen the sponge and use it to smooth the plastered patch, blend it well into the surrounding surface.

Step 9
You can apply a coat of paint similar to the existing wall color. Once it dries off slightly, sand the area to make it look even. Finish by applying the white-pigmented shellac.

If you are worried if the hole is bigger than expected, then it is best to call a professional to do this task. He/she will be able to do it perfectly. In case you don’t have enough time to work on the holes, just hang a frame, fix a wallpaper, or any other type of wall decoration items, so that this hole is not visible.

The Basic Set of Tools No Homeowner Should be Without

The Basic Set of Tools No Homeowner Should be Without

For new homeowners, the shift away from having a landlord or maintenance professional handle every little problem that goes wrong in an apartment or rented home can be a bit shocking. Rather than making a phone call and having someone magically appear to fix a leaky toilet, malfunctioning furnace, or patch holes in drywall, the new homeowner must learn to be self-sufficient or, alternatively, pay the price to have a professional come in to correct small issues.

For the enterprising sort, or for those who simply do not wish to absorb the costs of paying someone to fix small issues―which is always a shock after living in a maintenance-free rental environment―learning some basics and acquiring the requisite tools to perform the most common household tasks is a good first step. Without further ado, here is a quick list that can be very helpful in overcoming what new homeowners are likely to face.

The Real Basics
Most major home improvement stores and hardware stores will carry tool sets that include the most commonly-used tools, which can then be supplemented with a few extras. These are the things that most people will have acquired along the way prior to owning a home, though for those who are not very handy, perhaps becoming a homeowner will represent the first foray into ‘do it yourself’ repair. A good set of basic hand tools should include the following:

Claw Hammer
Tape Measure
Submarine Level
Hacksaw
Screwdrivers―Multiple Sizes (Regular and Phillips)
Adjustable Wrench
Pliers (Regular and Needle Nose)
Channel Locks
Hex Wrenches
Extension Cord

Cordless Drill
The very first tool to purchase beyond the basics noted above should be a cordless drill. And if you’ll be spending a lot of money on any given tool, this is the one to spend it on. Cordless drills have come a long way since their inception, and 18-Volt models should be good for most homeowners. There are options with more and less battery power, but any less is generally less effective for actually drilling (the drill can also be used as a powerful driver) and any more is generally unnecessary at the homeowner level. Buying an extra battery is also a good move, and if the drill, battery and charger are properly cared for, they will last a long time. Be sure to pick up a set of bits and drivers as well, in multiple sizes. In the future, for those who wish to get into more and more improvement projects, there are a variety of attachments and bits that can be used for a wide variety of applications.

Power Tools
For the most part, the average homeowner will never need power tools, beyond the cordless drill. However, for the more adventurous, power tools can take projects to the next level. The most basic power tools to consider, and that have the widest array of applications, are the circular saw, the reciprocating saw, the miter saw (for cutting moldings) and the table saw. For some, adding in an electric drill will also be a good idea, but an 18-Volt cordless drill, noted above, will be sufficient for most projects.

Lawn and Garden Equipment
Which tools to purchase for lawn maintenance and gardening is largely a product of the homeowner’s environment. Those dwelling in the city may need nothing more than a garden hose to spray down their concrete backyard. For those in the suburbs or rural areas, however, the needs expand greatly. Obviously, a push mower will work for small yards, while a riding mower will be warranted for yards approaching an acre or more. For those with larger yards, a large-deck (48 inches or more) mower with a small or zero-turn radius might be a good idea. Beyond that, here is a selection of garden tools that should be purchased for the homeowner with a medium- to large-sized yard to maintain.

Shovel
Spade
Hoe
Garden Rake
Leaf Rake
Chainsaw
Hedge Trimmers
String Trimmer or ‘Weed-eater’
Ax
Post-hole Digger
Pruners

These tools and appliances should suffice for most home improvement or repair projects. If you need anything more than this, then it might be more advisable to call in for professional help.

Motion Detector Lights Troubleshooting

Motion Detector Lights Troubleshooting

Today, motion detector lights are considered to be the source of security, or you can say, watchdogs, if you speak about the safety of your own house. They not only help you see through the darkness, but come on with an alarming bang in case of hunches. The best part is that they automatically switch on when they sense any sort of motion, burglary, human, or animal movement in the surrounding area of a residence. They stay on for a while and all the detector alarms go off automatically. Now, in this time of action, all the chaos that is aroused is good enough to instill fear in the burglar and scare him till the end. Since these lights are so handy and useful to a homeowner and his property, it is obvious to keep a check on its regularity and proper functions, whether they work well or not. If, however, they malfunction, you could try out some simple motion detector lights troubleshooting tips for fixing them.

Troubleshooting Tips

Clean the Lights

As most of them are outdoor motion sensor lights, cleaning happens to be the most valid point though. Clean all its light surfaces with a piece of cloth and a cleaning solution. There can be mildew, debris, dust, light attracted freaky insects stuck into the sensors, and so on. These typical outdoor conditions soil the sensors, dim the capacity of the bulbs to emit proper light, and ultimately give out on the fixture’s normal functionality.

Check the Light Manually

A detector could be blocked due to some good reason eventually providing no power to the light. If you see a blockage, remove the interference that is causing it. Remember, interior lights have detectors on the switches, and the ones that are on the exterior have detectors fixed directly on the light(s).

Dysfunctional Detector

Another possibility can be a bad, dysfunctional sensor. If you find out that the detector or the sensor is gone completely bad and the alarms aren’t functioning well, it’s time to change them. You can only learn about the state of a bad detector by using an electrical meter. This meter will help you know whether there is electricity running through the main power supply box or not. If the power is missing, perhaps the breaker is tripped and if the electric power is present, that means the detector has gone bad. Buy a new one from the hardware store to fix the problem.

Fussy Light Bulbs

One of the most common problems with these lights is that of erratic light bulbs, which burn out over time. They are the main reason motion detector sensor lights do not work half the time. So, if you learn that the light bulbs aren’t working, unscrew them and replace the old for new with the same wattage. After replacement, switch on the bulb and check for its working condition.

Aim and Adjust the Sensor

If the lights do function, but if they do not function at the right time, there is no point. For this reason, you will have to adjust the points of the sensor correctly. Choose the area where you want the light to respond to, then hold the detector at its back and tilt it slightly such that the light sensor directs in your chosen area. Next, set the distance of the light to monitor and slide the Sensory Adjustment Dial to medium, low, or high state, depending on how far you want its light to respond to. Once all this has been decided, slide the switch to next and test the detector for its working condition.

Set the Right Time

There is a choice of adjusting the time of your motion detector lights to remain on even after the object or movement has been detected in your surroundings. The time range is standard, i.e., 30 seconds to somewhere around 10 minutes long. If, in this given time, the lights do not go off, then it’s time to adjust the sensory adjustment dial located on the detector to feed in the right time for the light to stay on.

It is hard to deny that with increasing technology in today’s world, a man’s life is becoming much easier day in and out. And, one of the major contributors are these motion detector lights, which guards a homeowner and his property and gives him sound sleep at night. These tips should come in handy the next time you have a problem with your security system.

perfect

You might be planning to paint your bathroom in a fresh shade by opting for a unique color scheme this time. Interior decor trends keep changing season after season, and keeping yourself updated about the same is helpful for giving your house the latest look. But even as you browse through the colors, you might like to pick the one, which is from that ‘all time popular’ category, and not just good for a specific season. Let’s see the colors that can transform the appearance of your bathing space.

Fresh Green and Turquoise

Revamp your bathing space by using a beautiful turquoise with classy green. These are the best nautical colors that can turn your bathing area into a refreshing place. You can further use glass tiles in one of these colors and heighten the nautical effect. With turquoise shower curtains and colored bath accessories, you can have a great looking bathroom ready to use.

Plush Dark Red and Black

Dark red and black is a combination, which if used rightly, can create an extremely amazing space. You need to pay attention to the details, while you work on this design. From the walls, tiles (floor and wall), sanitary ware, fixtures, till the small accent pieces, everything must be a part of this color scheme. You can add spice with metal pieces and bronze colored accessories. Remember that this combo works best in larger spaces.

Tranquil Teal and White

This is one of the prettiest combinations, if you want to create a calming ambiance. Spruce up your bathing area by coloring it teal blue and adding white accessories. This soft combination will create a fresh and soothing space, perfect to have a relaxing bath. Get teal blue wall paint and a mix of blue and white tiles, add light-blue or white sanitary ware, and some lovely white accents on the bathroom vanity.

Funky Red and White

If you want to create a lively space, pick that hot red color. Add red in maximum elements and then balance it using white. Choosing any scheme widely depends upon your taste. You need not consider the paint colors of the rest of your house, while picking one for the bath area. Apart from the ones mentioned above, you can also opt for sage, crimson, pink, taupe, light wine, or mauve. Sage is one of the best paint colors for bathrooms, which can look wonderful when paired with off-white. With decorative walls that consist of inlays of off-white pebbles and plush glass partitions to create sections in the bathroom, you have an exquisite space to bathe. By using one of the best combos, you can rightly transform your dull and old bathroom into a fresh bathing area.

How to Install Hinges

How to Install Hinges

hinges

Hinges are normally installed on doors, boxes, and kitchen cabinets to facilitate movement. The various types available can also help you determine the extent to which you want the door to open. Beautiful and innovative styles of hinges can also enhance your home decor to a great extent. Installing them is not a very complex procedure and can be easily done on your own.

Installing Door Hinges

Step 1
Before you start installing hinges on your door, you must decide which way your door will open, to determine their placement. Some of them work both ways as they are reversible, while some of them will have specific left or right markings on them.

Step 2
Normally hinges are installed at 5 inches from above the door frame and 10 inches from below it. You will need to mark these positions on the door frame where you will be installing them. Remove already present hinges in case you are replacing them.

Step 3
Place the hinge on its position and trace it’s outline on the door frame. Use a pencil or an erasable marker for this. Ensure that you trace the exact height and width of the hinge. As you will be attaching it to the door frame with screws, mark those places as well.

Step 4
Pick up a chisel and hammer to jab the marked outline area on the door frame. This will form a depression for you to install the hinge. Remove any wood splinters in this area to clear it for the hinge to fit in.

Step 5
Take the hinge, and with help of screws, fix it at its determined place. If it is done properly, you will notice that the hinge is level with the door frame and is fixed firmly in its position. Attach the other half in its position(following steps 2, 3 and 4), all the while referring your instruction manual, in case there are any particular directions you need to follow. Use a hinge pin to connect the two halves.

Installing Hinges on a Box

Step 1
Hold the wood box and lid in such a way that you can easily access all points in the box and lid. Keep the lid on the box in the way it would appear when the box is closed.

Step 2
Take your hinges and keep them on the box like you would want them to be installed. Their position should, ideally, be 4 inches from ends of the lid. Bear in mind, the top leaf of the hinge should be straight in line with the top of the lid. Make markings for screws with pencil through the top leaf holes on hinges.

Step 3
Keep the hinges aside and with the help of a drilling machine, drill holes at the screw markings you just made. The holes should not be bigger in diameter than the screws you are going to fit through them. Put the hinges back in position, insert screws through the holes, and tighten them with a screwdriver.

Step 4
For the bottom leaf of the hinge, make hole markings with a pencil. Remove the hinges, drill holes, fix the hinges, and tighten them with screws. You have successfully installed hinges on a box.

You should be able to perform the task, at the most, in an hour. However, if you want to install hinges which are a little more complex in structure, call for a carpenter to help you out.

Shower Room Design Ideas

Shower Room Design Ideas

The world of bathroom decorating has undergone a sea change over the years. While earlier people were satisfied with simple and practical designs for shower rooms, today they have realized that the visual appeal of a shower room is as important as its usefulness. Luxury and splendor can be incorporated even into a bathroom, and that’s what we’ll tell you how to do, in this Buzzle article. We have some ideas on how to design a glorious bathroom that will become the envy of everyone visiting it.

Contemporary
If a contemporary look is what you want for your bathroom, then the key is to use hushed tones in the design and the décor of the shower room. A simplistic design will work best for the contemporary, no fuss appeal. Have a shower enclosure with a glass door in the corner that faces the door. Get a clear glass door for the shower room, with a curtain hanging from the inside. The bathtub and the sink can face the shower enclosure vertically. Wood and light colored stone (cream, brown or beige) are the safest and most versatile materials you can use for shower room décor. Make sure that the sink (opposite the tub) is huge and the counter of the sink runs across the length of the tub. For effect, have a flower vase on the huge counter at all times. The flowers can be white, and also include a leaf or two for a little contrast. As far as storage is concerned, enclosed and beneath the sink is the best option. It won’t take away anything from the overall ambiance and will be convenient as well.

Monochrome
For someone who likes to play it safe and have a shower room that does not scream out loud, a monochrome is the way to go. Choose one color and design a clean and compact shower room using it. For instance, white is a very popular choice for monochromatic bathrooms. You can have a pristine tub in one corner, his and hers sinks across the tub, and a shower enclosure with translucent shower curtains in another corner, all in white. If you’re thinking of picking another color, then go for light shades like gray, very light green, beige, cream, and so on. For this design idea, enclosed cabinets above the respective sinks will work well. Or you can have them made and placed in a separate section of the room altogether.

Victorian
A Victorian theme for a bathroom is one of the best ideas, because of its detailed beauty. For a gorgeous Victorian bathroom décor, you’ll definitely need a claw foot tub. Place it on the longer side of the bathroom. Across the tub, you can have a glass enclosure with a walk in shower, or simply a portion sectioned off with a curtain. A huge ornately carved mirror will be the highlight of the shower room. It can be right above a large sink and have an ornate dark wood stool right next to it. Dark wood cabinets for storage can be placed below the sink or in a separate area.

Ultra Modern
Here’s an idea for those who want the room to scream style and panache! A huge bathroom with a sunken bathtub, placed vertically in the center of the bathroom is what you need. Have a huge mirror that runs from the ceiling to the floor placed right at the head of the bathtub. This mirror can be flanked by some fancy yellow lights, about halfway up the wall. Storage can be on any side of the tub. It will have to be a concealed cabinet, so that the visual appeal of the bathroom is not dulled. On the side that does not have the cabinet, you can place a tall flower vase in a bright color, that runs vertically halfway across the wall.

Minimalist
The basic point of having a minimalist design for a shower room is to maximize the space that you have, and use it as economically as possible. It is a very modern and practical approach to the designing and can turn out to be a masterpiece when done properly. For a minimalist design, a monochromatic color scheme works best. You need to have minimum accessories and shelves enclosed within walls to ensure that there is enough space within the bathroom. A simple design idea for it would be a tub and a sink (both in the same color), no separate shower enclosure, a cabinet that slides open into the wall for storage, and a simple rug outside the tub. Nothing gets exposed, everything stays concealed.

When you design a bathroom, you must keep not only yourself in mind, but also probable visitors. Sure you’re the one who should be the most comfortable using it, but make sure that the aesthetic value of the bathroom remains intact at all times. Regular cleaning and maintenance is the only way to do it. So design a beautiful bathroom and take good care of it!

Interior Painting Ideas for Bedrooms

Interior Painting Ideas for Bedrooms

If you ask me my favorite place in this world, I would say my bedroom. This is one place where I can be simply me! I think this holds true for almost all of us. We relax in our bedrooms, watch TV, read, and talk to our family members. In other words, we carry on a lot of personal activities in this space of our house. That’s why, when it comes to painting the interiors of our bedrooms, we should go in for colors that reflect our personality. Of course, this does not mean that you end up painting the room bright red. Keeping the impact of colors on the room surroundings as well as on the mood of the inhabitants is equally important.

For all those who have taken on the task of painting a bedroom, a bit of knowledge of color psychology is a must. There are basically three kinds of colors, i.e., warm colors, cool colors, and neutral colors.

Warm Colors
Bright colors like yellow, red, and orange are considered warm colors. These colors are known to add energy and vibrancy to a room. They are believed to make the room look dark and small. That’s why, most experts will recommend you to avoid painting your bedroom with these colors.

Cool Colors
Green, blue, and all pastel shades like light pink and light purple fall in this category. Cool colors are believed to have a very soothing effect on the mind and body. If they are used for painting a bedroom, they can relax and calm the persons living in it.

Muted Colors
Neutral colors like gray, beige, skin color, and brown fall in this category. These colors are known to offer stability and comfort to the room surroundings. If painted on the bedroom walls, they can suppress the effect of bright colors used in the accessories or fabrics in the room.

Looking at the effect these colors have, cool colors are the most suited to paint bedrooms. Neutral colors are comforting, provided they are paired with some bright and interesting looking accessories and fabrics. Here are some colors and combinations that are in vogue.

Pink
Pink is often a preferred choice for painting a girl’s room, although, it looks equally good as a color for master bedroom walls too. As there are different shades of pink available in paints, a creative idea is to paint three walls in light pink color and the fourth one in a hot, bolder pink shade. This will make your room look interesting and come alive.

Yellow and White
Yellow is a warm color, which can make the surroundings excitable and energetic, instead of relaxing as they should be. Still, if balanced with white accessories and fabrics, as well as some white murals on the wall, it can make your bedroom look very cheerful.

Green and Blue
Both green and blue are very soothing colors. However, many people do not use them in combination, as they appear to be in contrast to one another. In reality, painting the bedroom in lighter shades like these can give it a unique feel. Keeping all the walls light green and painting the ceiling in sky blue with some white stars stenciled on it will lend a very natural feel to the room.

White and Red
If you are someone who wants a tinge of energy in the bedroom, painting the walls in white, and making designs on them in warm colors such as red is a good idea. Making circles of various sizes with red paint on the four corners, while keeping the room walls plain white, will even out the effect of warm color, and at the same time, the warm color will lend energy to the room. With this color combination, keep the room accessories red and white as well.

Sponge painting, faux painting, making hand prints on one of the walls, stripes, polka dots, geometric designs, murals, trees and leaves―you can do whatever you want on your bedroom walls, as long as it does not overwhelm the surroundings or makes the room appear cramped. One last tip―your bedroom is your personal sanctuary, so paint it with some creative designs and colors that are totally you.

Garage Floor Coating and Painting Tips

Garage Floor Coating and Painting Tips

The garage is the most neglected part of the house. It is because of this that it tend to gets smelly and dirty, and requires constant repairs. The floor space also needs to be constantly touched up with paint because it is utilized the maximum. This information is only to create awareness, and ultimately you will have to take the decision yourself depending on your preferences for the space.

Types of Coatings and Some Tips

Epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic sealer/stainer, and latex are the four kinds that are available in the market. Here is some information about them.

Epoxy
This is the most widely used as it forms a hard durable surface and a strong bond on the concrete. They are a much thicker coating than acrylic and are also believed to be very durable. Further, this covering tends to turn yellow and loses its gloss when it is exposed to sunlight for long periods of time. Remember to prepare the area, before applying the epoxy and ensure that it is completely free of dirt and dust. When that is done, wait for the right temperature and apply it. However, they are difficult to apply as they require thorough concrete preparation and the use of rollers. Moreover, they are time sensitive during the application. Epoxy dries to a touch in a few minutes, however, do wait for many days before you drive your car over it.

Acrylic Sealers
These can also give it a more attractive look by providing a somewhat wet and shiny appearance, or you can also opt for a matte finish that is less flashy. When applied, these dry to touch in a few hours. According to the weather conditions at the application time, they can be driven on the next day or earlier than that. It is better to opt for these with UV protection, as the exposed parts can turn yellow over a certain period of time.

Polyurethane
Another alternative, polyurethane resists chemical spills much better than epoxy and does not even fade easily. Along with these features, it is a very durable one that dries to a high gloss. Unfortunately, it cannot be used on the floor directly. If you do plan to use polyurethane, you would need to first apply an epoxy primer on the floor and then the same.

Latex Paints
The cheapest of all, latex paints are antique looking stains that can create a unique and warm finish. This paint covers imperfections on the concrete and is permanent. The stain coating can be damaged because of exposure to the sun, it is thus advisable to apply a protective coating over it.

Some Painting Tips

When you begin it, ensure that the area in which you are working is well ventilated. Also, wear eye protection and protective gloves in order to protect your hands and eyes against the chemicals.

To begin using the epoxy paint, sweep and clean the area thoroughly.
To remove the stains use a 3 to 1 water to bleach mixture, or a driveway or commercially-prepared cleaner. Use a sprayer to spray the cleaner on to the stains and allow it to soak for a few minutes. Once the time is over, scrub the stain using a stiff-bristle brush.
Now, starting at the back of the garage, rinse the area well with clean water. Use a pressure washer for tough stains.
After that is done, wait for the floor to dry. Use concrete or mortar-repair compound for smaller cracks and concrete patches to repair the smaller cracks and big cracks respectively. When the compound is being applied, make sure that the cracks are clean and dry.
Next, etch the surface of the concrete. Basically, this is a process wherein the pores of the concrete surface are opened. You can check if the floor needs to be etched by sprinkling a small amount of water on the same. If the floor absorbs the water, then the concrete does not need etching.
If you have to etch it, then let it dry thoroughly. To help with the drying process, you can switch on the fan.
Now use a long-handled paint roller to apply a primer coat. Remember to let it dry for at least 8 hours before applying the topcoat.
Use nylon brushes. The roller covers that you use, should be lint-free and solvent and water resistant.
Do a touch-up on the required areas once a year.

How to Install Laminate Flooring in a Bathroom

How to Install Laminate Flooring in a Bathroom

Laminates are not a popular choice for bathroom flooring, as most people believe that high level of water exposure may buckle its planks. However, there are waterproof laminates available in home improvement stores which can be installed in bathrooms. There are a number of advantages associated with this type of flooring. It is made of an environment friendly material which is highly durable, and its cleaning and maintenance is not a big hassle at all.

As you know, waterproof laminates are to be selected for bathrooms. Take measurements of the bathroom and calculate the exact quantity of laminates needed. You also have to buy rubber underlay pads, nails, hammer, crow bar, power saw, rubber mallet, utility knife, etc. When you have procured all these necessary items, follow the installation instructions elaborated in the following Buzzle passages.

The Installation Process

Step #1: The first step is preparation of the work area. The best part of this flooring is that it can be laid on any type of surface, provided that the floor condition is good and is properly leveled. Remove the baseboards from walls, clean the floor, and check for any defects. If any damage is detected, it should be repaired before laying the floor. While working in bathroom, you have to disconnect the water supply, remove the toilet, and cover up the drains.

Step #2: Prior to installation, you must go for a dry run. Here, you will place the laminate board on the floor to get an idea how to cover up the floor. This is done because there are bathroom fixtures where you cannot fit in a whole plank. For them to fit in such areas, you need to cut the planks using a power saw.

Step #3: Place a moisture barrier sheet on the bathroom floor. Secure it along the edges so that it does not get displaced. Now, lay the rubber underlay pads over the plastic sheet. Generally, manufacturers provide instructions about installation of underlay pads and you have to follow the same. You have to cut holes on this pad when you are laying it around toilet flange and other such areas of the bathroom.

Step #4: Start installing laminate flooring in bathroom from any one corner. Place the first board one-fourth inch away from the bathroom wall. This is an expansion gap which has to be maintained along all the edges of the flooring. In order to keep the gaps uniform, you can use tile spacers. Lay the next board in such a way that the top edges of both the boards touch each other. Then take a rubber mallet and tap it gently so that the two planks get interlocked. Use the same technique to lay the remaining boards. You have to install the specially cut planks of laminate flooring around the toilet flange and other such areas in the same way, but in a very carefully. When you reach the opposite end of the wall, lay the last board with great care. A crowbar will be helpful in setting in the last plank on the bathroom floor.

Step #5: Apply a layer of silicone sealant on the border lines of two adjacent laminate boards. This is done to ensure that water does not seep below the laminate through these edges. You should also seal up the areas where bathroom fixtures are located. Finally, fix up the baseboards on the walls, so that the expansion gaps of the newly installed laminate floor gets covered up.

Laminate flooring adds so much beauty and warmth to a bathroom which tiles or any other material cannot give. Moreover, the cost is not very high. Therefore, you can improve the décor without spending a huge sum of money.

Steps to Paint Vinyl Floors

Steps to Paint Vinyl Floors

Vinyl flooring is made from polyvinyl chloride, more commonly known as PVC. They are available either as tiles or in big sheets. In comparison with other flooring materials, vinyl flooring is more affordable. The cheaper option to changing the flooring is to just paint it. These are just a few steps that one should adhere to in order to avoid burning a hole in the pocket.

Vinyl flooring tiles have sheen over them. To remove this, buy a chemical wash from the paint dealer. There are two types of wash available, viz., trisodium phosphate or any ammonia-based solution. Use the chemical wash on the floor before painting it.
The floor should be dried completely, before starting off with the next step. Rub the floor using a sandpaper to remove all the shine.
There is a possibility that a de-glosser may be required, as the sandpaper might not be able to get rid of all the gloss from the corner areas. Before jumping to the next step, take a break for at least 15 minutes.
Just as in the case of painting walls, apply a coat of primer to the floor before painting it. Use any water-based primer, as PVC is a paint-resistant surface. The primer should be applied as a thick layer using a rolling brush, and make sure that all the edges and corners are also primed. Let it dry thoroughly for approximately 48 hours. The primer acts as an adhesive for the paint to stick to the vinyl flooring., so it is advisable to apply a second coat of it for increasing the longevity of the paint.
While you let the primer dry, why not undertake a survey and decide on the paint that you want to use. Normally, oil paint, garbage paint, or porch paint should be used. The porch paint will give the best results, as it is durable and would last at least a little more than other types of paint. It is suggested that a thick coat of paint should be applied, since the floor is utilized the maximum and there are chances of more wear and tear. Painting should be started at the farthest corner from the door. The paint should be applied using a roller brush, as it gives an even coating. Two to three coats of paint can be applied to the floor. Check if there are any imperfections. If you do come across an imperfection, just remove it. Let the paint dry thoroughly between each coat.
If you want to spruce up the look of the newly-made flooring, stencil patterns and designs available at craft stores can be added to it. To stick the pattern to the floor, you need a spray adhesive. Place the patterns the way you want them on the floor. Using the spray adhesive, stick them to the floor temporarily and apply the stencil paint. The spray adhesive will hold the stencil in place and will not let it move when the paint is applied. You can also create your own stencil designs and patterns. In case there are certain designs that you like, you can place them on the floor too. The procedure is the same as that for stencil designs and patterns. These ‘homemade’ designs will last due to the process that will be undertaken in the next step.
After the stencil work is done, the paint needs to be sealed. Since the floor is the most used part of the house, extra protection needs to be taken for the paint to last. The sealer will also give a clear finish to the floor. It is also necessary to choose a sealer compatible to the paint. Normally, polyurethane is suggested for the same. Use two to three coats of sealer to save time, energy, and money.
