Garage Floor Coating and Painting Tips

Garage Floor Coating and Painting Tips

The garage is the most neglected part of the house. It is because of this that it tend to gets smelly and dirty, and requires constant repairs. The floor space also needs to be constantly touched up with paint because it is utilized the maximum. This information is only to create awareness, and ultimately you will have to take the decision yourself depending on your preferences for the space.

Types of Coatings and Some Tips

Epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic sealer/stainer, and latex are the four kinds that are available in the market. Here is some information about them.

This is the most widely used as it forms a hard durable surface and a strong bond on the concrete. They are a much thicker coating than acrylic and are also believed to be very durable. Further, this covering tends to turn yellow and loses its gloss when it is exposed to sunlight for long periods of time. Remember to prepare the area, before applying the epoxy and ensure that it is completely free of dirt and dust. When that is done, wait for the right temperature and apply it. However, they are difficult to apply as they require thorough concrete preparation and the use of rollers. Moreover, they are time sensitive during the application. Epoxy dries to a touch in a few minutes, however, do wait for many days before you drive your car over it.

Acrylic Sealers
These can also give it a more attractive look by providing a somewhat wet and shiny appearance, or you can also opt for a matte finish that is less flashy. When applied, these dry to touch in a few hours. According to the weather conditions at the application time, they can be driven on the next day or earlier than that. It is better to opt for these with UV protection, as the exposed parts can turn yellow over a certain period of time.

Another alternative, polyurethane resists chemical spills much better than epoxy and does not even fade easily. Along with these features, it is a very durable one that dries to a high gloss. Unfortunately, it cannot be used on the floor directly. If you do plan to use polyurethane, you would need to first apply an epoxy primer on the floor and then the same.

Latex Paints
The cheapest of all, latex paints are antique looking stains that can create a unique and warm finish. This paint covers imperfections on the concrete and is permanent. The stain coating can be damaged because of exposure to the sun, it is thus advisable to apply a protective coating over it.

Some Painting Tips

When you begin it, ensure that the area in which you are working is well ventilated. Also, wear eye protection and protective gloves in order to protect your hands and eyes against the chemicals.

To begin using the epoxy paint, sweep and clean the area thoroughly.
To remove the stains use a 3 to 1 water to bleach mixture, or a driveway or commercially-prepared cleaner. Use a sprayer to spray the cleaner on to the stains and allow it to soak for a few minutes. Once the time is over, scrub the stain using a stiff-bristle brush.
Now, starting at the back of the garage, rinse the area well with clean water. Use a pressure washer for tough stains.
After that is done, wait for the floor to dry. Use concrete or mortar-repair compound for smaller cracks and concrete patches to repair the smaller cracks and big cracks respectively. When the compound is being applied, make sure that the cracks are clean and dry.
Next, etch the surface of the concrete. Basically, this is a process wherein the pores of the concrete surface are opened. You can check if the floor needs to be etched by sprinkling a small amount of water on the same. If the floor absorbs the water, then the concrete does not need etching.
If you have to etch it, then let it dry thoroughly. To help with the drying process, you can switch on the fan.
Now use a long-handled paint roller to apply a primer coat. Remember to let it dry for at least 8 hours before applying the topcoat.
Use nylon brushes. The roller covers that you use, should be lint-free and solvent and water resistant.
Do a touch-up on the required areas once a year.

How to Install Laminate Flooring in a Bathroom

How to Install Laminate Flooring in a Bathroom

Laminates are not a popular choice for bathroom flooring, as most people believe that high level of water exposure may buckle its planks. However, there are waterproof laminates available in home improvement stores which can be installed in bathrooms. There are a number of advantages associated with this type of flooring. It is made of an environment friendly material which is highly durable, and its cleaning and maintenance is not a big hassle at all.

As you know, waterproof laminates are to be selected for bathrooms. Take measurements of the bathroom and calculate the exact quantity of laminates needed. You also have to buy rubber underlay pads, nails, hammer, crow bar, power saw, rubber mallet, utility knife, etc. When you have procured all these necessary items, follow the installation instructions elaborated in the following Buzzle passages.

The Installation Process

Step #1: The first step is preparation of the work area. The best part of this flooring is that it can be laid on any type of surface, provided that the floor condition is good and is properly leveled. Remove the baseboards from walls, clean the floor, and check for any defects. If any damage is detected, it should be repaired before laying the floor. While working in bathroom, you have to disconnect the water supply, remove the toilet, and cover up the drains.

Step #2: Prior to installation, you must go for a dry run. Here, you will place the laminate board on the floor to get an idea how to cover up the floor. This is done because there are bathroom fixtures where you cannot fit in a whole plank. For them to fit in such areas, you need to cut the planks using a power saw.

Step #3: Place a moisture barrier sheet on the bathroom floor. Secure it along the edges so that it does not get displaced. Now, lay the rubber underlay pads over the plastic sheet. Generally, manufacturers provide instructions about installation of underlay pads and you have to follow the same. You have to cut holes on this pad when you are laying it around toilet flange and other such areas of the bathroom.

Step #4: Start installing laminate flooring in bathroom from any one corner. Place the first board one-fourth inch away from the bathroom wall. This is an expansion gap which has to be maintained along all the edges of the flooring. In order to keep the gaps uniform, you can use tile spacers. Lay the next board in such a way that the top edges of both the boards touch each other. Then take a rubber mallet and tap it gently so that the two planks get interlocked. Use the same technique to lay the remaining boards. You have to install the specially cut planks of laminate flooring around the toilet flange and other such areas in the same way, but in a very carefully. When you reach the opposite end of the wall, lay the last board with great care. A crowbar will be helpful in setting in the last plank on the bathroom floor.

Step #5: Apply a layer of silicone sealant on the border lines of two adjacent laminate boards. This is done to ensure that water does not seep below the laminate through these edges. You should also seal up the areas where bathroom fixtures are located. Finally, fix up the baseboards on the walls, so that the expansion gaps of the newly installed laminate floor gets covered up.

Laminate flooring adds so much beauty and warmth to a bathroom which tiles or any other material cannot give. Moreover, the cost is not very high. Therefore, you can improve the d├ęcor without spending a huge sum of money.

Steps to Paint Vinyl Floors

Steps to Paint Vinyl Floors

Vinyl flooring is made from polyvinyl chloride, more commonly known as PVC. They are available either as tiles or in big sheets. In comparison with other flooring materials, vinyl flooring is more affordable. The cheaper option to changing the flooring is to just paint it. These are just a few steps that one should adhere to in order to avoid burning a hole in the pocket.

Vinyl flooring tiles have sheen over them. To remove this, buy a chemical wash from the paint dealer. There are two types of wash available, viz., trisodium phosphate or any ammonia-based solution. Use the chemical wash on the floor before painting it.
The floor should be dried completely, before starting off with the next step. Rub the floor using a sandpaper to remove all the shine.
There is a possibility that a de-glosser may be required, as the sandpaper might not be able to get rid of all the gloss from the corner areas. Before jumping to the next step, take a break for at least 15 minutes.
Just as in the case of painting walls, apply a coat of primer to the floor before painting it. Use any water-based primer, as PVC is a paint-resistant surface. The primer should be applied as a thick layer using a rolling brush, and make sure that all the edges and corners are also primed. Let it dry thoroughly for approximately 48 hours. The primer acts as an adhesive for the paint to stick to the vinyl flooring., so it is advisable to apply a second coat of it for increasing the longevity of the paint.
While you let the primer dry, why not undertake a survey and decide on the paint that you want to use. Normally, oil paint, garbage paint, or porch paint should be used. The porch paint will give the best results, as it is durable and would last at least a little more than other types of paint. It is suggested that a thick coat of paint should be applied, since the floor is utilized the maximum and there are chances of more wear and tear. Painting should be started at the farthest corner from the door. The paint should be applied using a roller brush, as it gives an even coating. Two to three coats of paint can be applied to the floor. Check if there are any imperfections. If you do come across an imperfection, just remove it. Let the paint dry thoroughly between each coat.
If you want to spruce up the look of the newly-made flooring, stencil patterns and designs available at craft stores can be added to it. To stick the pattern to the floor, you need a spray adhesive. Place the patterns the way you want them on the floor. Using the spray adhesive, stick them to the floor temporarily and apply the stencil paint. The spray adhesive will hold the stencil in place and will not let it move when the paint is applied. You can also create your own stencil designs and patterns. In case there are certain designs that you like, you can place them on the floor too. The procedure is the same as that for stencil designs and patterns. These ‘homemade’ designs will last due to the process that will be undertaken in the next step.
After the stencil work is done, the paint needs to be sealed. Since the floor is the most used part of the house, extra protection needs to be taken for the paint to last. The sealer will also give a clear finish to the floor. It is also necessary to choose a sealer compatible to the paint. Normally, polyurethane is suggested for the same. Use two to three coats of sealer to save time, energy, and money.

Let us rush and get the materials, and start right away. We will be able to create our unique floors and flaunt them as though they were designed by a well-known designer.
